À quoi ça sert ? Ça veut dire quoi ça ? Pourquoi c'est comme ça ?
What's the point? What does that mean? Why is it like that?
C'est ? C'est qui lui ? Un jour, une question !
Where is it? Who is he? One day, one question!
C'est quoi une grève ?
What is a strike?
It is a work interruption decided by people to obtain certain benefits or to protest against an injustice.
Often, they are employees who oppose their boss because they do not agree with their working conditions or their wages.
Or students who stop going to class to challenge a law proposed by the government.
Or people who are doing the same job and who refuse measures that change their work.
Est-ce que la grève a toujours existé ?
Have strikes always existed?
Yes: the first goes back to the time of the Egyptians who had rebelled about their working conditions during the construction of the tomb of Ramses III.
France, meanwhile, had two huge strikes in 1936 and in 1968.
They had completely paralyzed the country, because millions of French had stopped working at the same time.
Prohibited for a long time, striking was gradually authorized by the law.
En 1946, elle est reconnue comme un droit.
In 1946, it is recognized as a right.
Hence, an employee is free to strike without being dismissed or poorly looked upon by his company.
However, he is not paid during days of strike.
Even today, there are exceptions.
Soldiers, prison guards or firefighters do not have the right to strike.
And public transport employees are obliged to notify 48 hours in advance of their intention to strike.
