It happened a few days ago.
Around 9:30 p.m., a famous 84-year-old photographer, René Robert, was walking quietly down the street near his home, towards République in Paris.
When suddenly he fell, as can happen at that age.
He lost consciousness and he remained on the pavement.
He remained there unconscious on the ground, for several seconds, several minutes, several hours, without anyone stopping to help him.
One hour, two hours, three hours, nine hours.
This elderly man was lying on the ground with a traumatic brain injury and blood around his head for nine hours.
Unconscious, in the middle of Paris, in a very lively district, without anyone leaning on him.
Without anyone helping him, without anyone calling for help.
Et cette inaction l'a tué.
And that inaction killed him.
René Robert, who might have been saved, died in an advanced state of hypothermia.
The greatest irony is that it was a homeless man who first looked at him and called the fire department.
This is not a news item, it is a social reality.
And it is a tragic fact for the person concerned and his entourage.
And it is tragic for what it tells about our society.
First of all, an indifferent society: because these kinds of stories don't even move us anymore.
Besides, it would never have been publicized if the deceased had not been a famous photographer.
France Info gave the floor to one of his friends, who paid him a moving tribute and asked THE question raised by this tragedy.
- Am I 100% sure that if I had been confronted with this scene of a man on the ground, I would have stopped?
Have I never turned away from a homeless person, whom I see lying in a gateway door entrance?
Not being able to be 100% sure is a boring pain that haunts me.
You are in a hurry, you are afraid, you have your own life, and then you look away.
And what this tragic end of life says is a totally hideous thing about our behavior and our solidarity with others.
- Le malaise est .
- The malaise is there.
I am not 100% sure that I would have stopped either.
Because in Paris, there are so many homeless people that you meet every day, in the metro, in the street or in front of shops, that they are almost part of the urban landscape.
It is not uncommon to see other humans, bundled up in filthy clothes, lying on the ground, and to convince yourself that they are sleeping.
Personally, I don't give to all the homeless, I even ignore some.
Because the truth is that this misery and this despair make me feel uncomfortable.
Rather close your eyes than feel this helplessness.
This unpleasant feeling of guilt that makes you unhappy.
And that is a sign that our system is sick with individualism.
We are numb to the suffering of others.
Ce constat est vertigineux, voire odieux.
This observation is dizzying, even odious.
Yet this drama is there to remind us that we cannot remain indifferent forever.
Because sooner or later, these tragedies catch up with us.
We witness them, they touch us through a relative or the relative of a relative.
This descent into hell can even hit us personally.
And at that moment, the selfishness of the world overwhelms us.
But it's too late to denounce it, because we're already on the wrong side.
On the side of those who are nothing, on the side of the invisible.
On the side of those whose death will never make the headlines.
And this video is not a plea, it is neither a platform nor a rant.
C'est une vidéo d'information.
This is an informational video.
