Author and cartoonist Riad Sattouf, creator of The Arab of the Future and Esther's Notebooks, is the patron of the Francophonie Week.
This lover of the French language wants to highlight the metamorphoses of writing as well as all graphic expressions, from calligraphy to graffiti.
Sibylle Veyron l'a rencontré.
Sibylle Veyron met him.
[Riad Sattouf] - I feel very honoured to be, uh, to have been chosen as patron of the French Language and Francophonie Week.
The French language was not my mother tongue at all.
It was Arabic and I learned French abroad.
[L'amour du français]
For me the language of stories or the language of new horizons, of imagination, was French.
Because it was the books that my Breton grandmother sent me in Syria that allowed me to read.
So French for me has always been linked to the world of knowledge, of the exploration of the world, of the description of the world, of openness towards others.
[Le pire mot français]
I think the word I like the least is "traitor".
The sound of the word goes well with the meaning.
[Une expression favorite]
[A favorite expression]
I would say "to be as alike as two drops of water".
Because until quite recently, I mean until the age of 10 or 12, I used to hear it as "to be as alike as two hits with your back".
And I was thinking, but it's... how can we... what's the point of looking alike by hitting each other with our backs?
I didn't realize it was drops of water, that's all.
So every time I hear it again today I tend to say "ah they are as alike as two hits with the back"!
Et voilà.
There you go.
[Le mot à inventer]
[The word to invent]
Well, I love space conquest, and I don't think there's a word for landing on Mars in French.
Est-ce qu'on dit "amarsissage", "amarsage", "amarss..." ?
Do we say "marslanding" or...?
Donc il faudrait créer un mot, voilà.
So we should create a word, that's it.
It's about to happen, we shouldn't be left without a word.
[La chanson française]
Maybe it's "Les comédiens" by Charles Aznavour that I really like.
"Come see the actors, see the musicians, see the magicians who are coming"....
"The actors have set up their board, they have raised their stage and extended banners..."
Listening to this song I realized, well, that French could be sung.
That, well, there was a kind of enthusiasm and a lot of words I didn't know.
So it's a song that really sounds like a symbol of the French language when I hear it.
