Thé ou café ? Tartines ou céréales ? Que mangent les ménages au petit déjeuner ?
Tea or coffee? Bread or cereal? What do households eat for breakfast?
To find out, we followed a family from early in the morning.
C'est un reportage de Maëlle Kerguénou.
It's a report by Maëlle Kerguénou.
8am at the Ribaute family's home in the Paris region.
Here the first one up is Philippe, the father.
[Philip] - Well, it's the beginning of my day.
It's the beginning of my day because, actually, uh, I'm not awake until I have breakfast.
At this time of day Philippe is still alone at the breakfast table.
His ritual: a very dark tea to which he adds a little milk, all accompanied by toast with jam or honey.
Eh oui, notre bonne vieille baguette nationale reste définitivement indétrônable.
Yes, our good old national baguette remains definitely unbeatable.
In France, more than 70% of adults eat bread for their first meal of the day.
Meanwhile, it's time to wake up for Maxence, Timothée and Orlane.
Les premières minutes sont un peu difficiles.
The first few minutes are a little difficult.
[Mom] - Are you awake yet?
Maxence, Orlane ?
Maxence, Orlane?
But as every morning, it is hunger that eventually prevails over sleep.
And if you think it's same menu for everyone, you'll be surprised.
Because everyone here has their own little habits, like Maxence, 10 years old.
[The journalist] - Maxence, what are you having for breakfast?
[Maxence] - Lait chaud plus céréales.
[Maxence] - Hot milk plus cereal.
Ah, les céréales du petit déjeuner !
Ah, breakfast cereals!
They arrived here in the 1960s and today we eat 128,000 tons of them per year, or 6.5 kilos per household.
Pascale Hebel, an economist specializing in food consumption, explains the reasons for this success.
[Pascale Hebel] - Maxence takes cereal with milk and it's really what's most common with children.
Indeed, of all the children's breakfasts, about a quarter are made up of breakfast cereals.
So in fact it's a breakfast that's already quite complete since there are both cereals and milk, and it's more convenient.
That's why it has spread among the children.
But be careful though, because some cereals are very high in sugar.
Maxence's younger brother, Timothée, has set his sights on the famous spread.
In France 75,000 tons are consumed every year.
[Pascale Hebel] - Timothée takes spread like some children, but it's true that it's not what weighs the most in the French breakfast.
What we see is that there has been a decrease in this consumption following the controversies over palm oil.
And that's good, because from a dietary point of view, better bet on jam.
As for the Ribaute family's drinks, the traditional orange juice sits on the table every morning.
It is at breakfast that we drink the most but nevertheless its consumption decreases.
[Pascale Hebel] - Between 2010 and 2013 there were significant price increases on orange.
And so eventually prices increased so with the crisis it is a product that has been somewhat erased from the French breakfasts.
Okay, we got it, orange juice is not really popular anymore.
What about Delphine then, what does she drink in the morning?
[Delphine] - Well, my ritual is English milk tea.
Hey, isn't she copying her husband a little bit?
In fact, it's mainly because tea has become very trendy.
[Pascale Hebel] - We really have a trend that goes with what Delphine and Philippe do when they drink tea.
It is really a drink that has made great progress over the past ten years or so, since the antioxidant character of this product has been highlighted.
And we have observed that with the crisis, tea being cheaper than anything else, we really have a growth of all hot drinks, including coffee.
So coffee is a beverage that remains predominant.
Predominant among adults: 58% of them report drinking coffee in the morning.
But on the younger side, the preference is for drinkable yoghurt, which is increasingly replacing milk at the breakfast table.
